There is news from Google! Google introduces reCAPTCHA v3. The third version of reCAPTCHA, a service from Google that is supposed to keep bots away from websites as much as possible, is built a bit differently this time.

The previous versions

Previously, the page visitor had to interact with reCAPTCHA. Maybe you have done this before. Most of the time you were asked to press on all images with a bus or traffic signs to confirm that you are not a bot but a human. This is time-consuming and also often annoying, because sometimes you have to repeat the procedure if you accidentally overlooked a picture where a corner of the bus or sign was still visible. It's not uncommon for visitors to simply leave the site and not see your content in its entirety.

Version 3 no longer disturbs

reCAPTCHA v3 is different. The user should not notice at all during his visit that he is currently rated as a bot or human. reCAPTCHA v3 determines a value from 0.0 to 1.0, based on your interactions on the website. The higher the value, the less your behavior is rated as a bot, meaning reCAPTCHA recognizes that you are a human who is currently visiting the website. So no more challenges and tasks for visitors that disrupt the experience on the website. reCAPTCHA works quietly in the background and creates risk analyses for the site operator.

More influence for website operators

In previous versions, the site owner had no influence on how reCAPTCHA evaluates visitors as bots. Now it's a bit different. You can specify with an "Actions" tag what should be evaluated as suspicious behavior and what not. reCAPTCHA analyzes the behavior based on the context you specify. In your dashboard you will have an exact overview.

Google warns that false positives can happen in the beginning, so you should not create too many actions that define bot behavior in the beginning. It is better to let reCAPTCHA learn first and then optimize it later. Also, you should include the reCAPTCHA on multiple pages so that the service can better evaluate the context and how everything on your website is connected.
